Fathers Day has always held a very special place in my heart. At a young age, I lost my father and each time the holiday came around I felt his absence anew. It was a reminder of everything my family and I lost when my father was taken from us. Deep wounds heal slowly, especially for children.
It is because of the profound impact this had on my life that I understand how important a father is to my own sons. Now that I'm a mother to three beautiful boys, Fathers Day is a joyous celebration of my own family unity. I think my boys understand how lucky they are to have such a caring and supporting father in their lives. Whatever else happens in my days, I feel I have achieved an ultimate victory in providing a loving home for my sons.
And of course, there's the fact that I'm raising three potential fathers! It's crucial that my sons grow up understanding the importance of fatherhood and seeing good examples of family cohesion. Though boys will sometimes fight, they love each other very much and they are usually very respectful to myself and their father. I know if I provide them with a stable home they will be more likely to have the skills necessary to build their own healthy homes one day.
I'm not in any rush to be a grandmother, but I must admit to feeling overjoyed at the thought of my boys going out into the world on their own and being successful at starting their own lives. I hope I have given them the right mixture of support and self-confidence to know that they are capable of anything.
A holiday that once held nothing but sadness and loss for me has become a reminder of how lucky I am to have a strong family and the importance of the connection between my sons and their father. I have high hopes for my sons' futures and faith in their abilities to be wonderful fathers someday.
